In America, the land of liberty and justice for all, we pride ourselves on our commitment to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and the ability to lead our lives free from fear and oppression. Yet, there is a growing concern that aspects of Sharia Law, which can contradict U.S. laws and democratic principles, are gaining unwarranted influence in our society.

Sharia Law, in some interpretations, allows for practices that are starkly opposed to the values we hold dear, such as the legal marrying age for young girls. In the United States, marrying a 12-year-old is legally and morally unacceptable, yet certain interpretations of the Quran conflict with these standards and could, if unregulated, permit such practices to emerge.

This issue is deeply personal to me. As a parent and a concerned citizen, I cannot fathom a future where archaic and oppressive practices creep into our communities under the guise of cultural or religious acceptance. Freedom of religion is a cornerstone of our society, yet no belief system should permit actions that contravene our laws or jeopardize the welfare of our citizens.

The United States Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but it also guarantees equal protection under the law. There is no place in our society for any law or practice that undermines the rights of individuals, particularly the most vulnerable among us — our children.

The notion that religious beliefs could override the laws designed to protect our citizens opens the door to a dangerous precedent. We must be proactive in addressing this issue. It's imperative that we call upon Congress to propose and pass legislation that makes the imposition of Sharia Law, or any religious law that contradicts U.S. laws, illegal within our borders.

Additionally, we need to ensure better education and awareness programs that highlight the potential dangers of allowing parallel legal systems to take root. These initiatives should promote the understanding of U.S. constitutional rights, highlighting the importance of adhering to one national legal standard.
