The Issue

Bird-window collisions are the second leading anthropogenic cause of bird deaths, responsible for an estimated 16 to 42 million bird mortalities annually in Canada.

Over a period of 170 days, I monitored 8 buildings at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Burnaby, where I found evidence over 300 window collisions. Extrapolating from my data, it is estimated that more than 2,000 birds collided with windows during this period on our campus alone. These collisions are not only tragic but also preventable.

Solution: Feather Friendly Solutions

Bird-friendly solutions, such as Feather Friendly dots, have been proven to significantly reduce bird-window collisions. We have already secured funding and materials, and identified high-risk locations on campus for the installation of these solutions.

Call to Action

We need the support of SFU management to implement these vital measures. By doing so, SFU can join other leading Canadian universities that have adopted sustainable practices to protect bird populations. Retrofitting high-risk facades and implementing bird-friendly policies will make our campus safer for birds and demonstrate SFU's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Sign the Petition

We urge students, faculty, staff and the general public to sign this petition to show SFU management that this is an important student-led issue for the university community. Together, we can make a significant difference and protect the birds that share our campus.

Thank you for your support.
