Make school uniforms accessible for everyone
The Issue
Suits Us: Making Uniforms Accessible for Everyone
Why this matters
School is a place where we should all feel safe, focused, and ready to learn. However, for many students at Atlantic Academy and Bideford College, strict uniform policies are creating unnecessary barriers to our education and well-being. We believe that school clothing should accommodate everyone, not force everyone to fit into the exact same mold.
We are launching the "Suits Us" campaign to advocate for two critical changes to our uniform policies:
1. Freedom of Self-Expression
Clothing is a fundamental way for young people to discover and express who they are. Rigid uniform rules can feel restrictive and alienating. Allowing students to express themselves freely through minor style choices, hairstyles, or small personal touches builds confidence, identity, and a more positive relationship with school.
2. Necessary Sensory Adjustments
For neurodivergent students—including those with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing differences—certain textures, tight collars, stiff blazers, or labels can cause physical discomfort, anxiety, and extreme sensory overload. When a student is struggling just to tolerate the fabric rubbing against their skin, they cannot focus on their lessons. Allowing adjustments (such as soft alternative fabrics, tagless options, or removing specific restrictive items) is not about breaking rules—it is about basic accessibility.
Our Goal
We want school leaders to work with students and parents to update the uniform policy so that it is inclusive, flexible, and accessible. A uniform should bring a school community together, but it should never come at the expense of a student's mental health, comfort, or individuality.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for a school environment that respects identity, supports sensory needs, and truly "suits" all of us.
