The Issue

As a parent of a child in secondary school, I've witnessed firsthand how short lunch breaks can negatively impact students' well-being and academic performance. My child, along with many others, often struggles to eat a nutritious meal, relax, and prepare for the next round of classes in the scant 30-minute breaks allotted. This is a problem that needs immediate attention to ensure our children's physical and mental health is prioritized.

Current research suggests that longer lunch breaks have a significantly positive impact on students. According to a study published by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, students who have more time for lunch eat more fruits and vegetables and drink more milk, reducing food waste as well. These eating habits can lead to improved concentration and energy levels for the rest of the school day.

Moreover, the National Education Union states that longer breaks can aid in reducing stress and improving overall behaviour. A minimum of 50 minutes would allow students not only to eat properly but also engage in essential physical activities or social interactions, which are critical for their personal development.

Schools with shorter lunch breaks could argue about logistical or scheduling challenges. However, a restructuring of the school day can solve these issues without extending the overall school hours significantly. Adjusting class durations slightly or utilizing time from less critical activities can afford students the break time they need.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our educational environments support the holistic development of our children. Offering a reasonable break length can enhance their educational experience and contribute to their well-being.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a change that advocates for educational policies focused on the betterment and holistic growth of our children in secondary schools. Let’s push for this change and help cultivate an environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.
