Make San Francisco's legal system accountable

Make San Francisco's legal system accountable
The Issue
In 2021, my brother was brutally killed while driving through an intersection on the streets of San Francisco. The person ran a red light mid sequence - completely blatantly disregarding the law. This horrifying incident was captured on camera; yet, justice has been elusive. Instead of being held accountable, the driver charged in connection with his death has so far evaded the legal process. The passenger in the vehicle reportedly fled the scene. This is not an isolated incident but a tragic symptom of a systemic failure within the legal framework.
How many lives must be lost before the system acts?
There is an urgent need to reform the judicial processes that currently allow perpetrators to walk free.
Our Asks:
(To SFPD Chief Lew) Actively pursue the outstanding warrant for the driver responsible and dedicate investigative resources to locating suspects who flee fatal crashes — rather than letting them remain at large for years.
(To DA Jenkins) Prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law, and uphold our family's rights under Marsy's Law to be informed and heard at every stage.
(To Chief Lew and the Police Commission) Require mandatory drug and alcohol testing of every driver arrested in a fatal or serious-injury collision, with documented, auditable protocols.
(To Senator Wiener, Assemblymembers Haney and Stefani, and Governor Newsom) Strengthen state penalties for hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, and failure to appear in fatal-crash cases, and close the loopholes that let defendants evade trial.
(To the Police Commission, Department of Police Accountability, and AG Bonta) Conduct an independent review of how this case was handled and why a known, charged suspect was never apprehended.
(To Mayor Lurie) Establish a task force focused specifically on enforcing and prosecuting fatal traffic crimes — not just street
Can we stand by as more lives are senselessly lost due to an ineffective legal system? The pain of losing a loved one is unbearable, and we must push for reforms that ensure accountability, stricter penalties, and a commitment to enforcing the law without bias or loopholes.
We propose the immediate review and amendment of current hit-and-run laws, bolstering resources for law enforcement to investigate and prosecute these crimes more effectively. Additionally, we call for the implementation of a specialized task force dedicated to addressing and reducing pedestrian fatalities on San Francisco's streets.
We owe it to those we've lost, to demand change and ensure no other family suffers such an irreversible tragedy. Sign this petition and join us in calling for a more just, accountable, and effective legal system in San Francisco.
