Make Saldanha Safer: Urgent Call for Traffic Calming Measures on Main Road

The Issue

Something urgently needs to be done to slow down the speeding cars on Saldanha’s Main Road. The stretch between the traffic circle and BP garage has become increasingly dangerous, with tragic consequences. On November 9, 2021, Michelle De Clerck was struck by a speeding car driven by a naval officer while she was crossing near the OK Grocer. Sadly, this preventable accident took her life and left a lasting impact on our community.

Exactly three years later, on November 9, 2024, tragedy struck again. Local twins, Alex and Zoe Arends, just 22 years old, were killed in a high-speed accident on the very same stretch of road. These heartbreaking events have left families devastated and our community shaken, yet speeding continues unchecked.

While we know responsible driving is essential, implementing traffic calming measures, like a robot or speed bumps, would help prevent future tragedies. These measures act as a strong deterrent, encouraging drivers to slow down and stay vigilant. By signing this petition, you’re standing up for safer streets and supporting life-saving changes that will protect everyone who lives, works, and travels in Saldanha. Let’s make Saldanha Main Road safe for all!
