Living on the Balboa peninsula in Newport Beach has been a constant reminder of how traffic laws—or the lack thereof—can drastically affect lives. The reality is brutal; the absence of effective traffic control measures has led not only to countless injuries but also to the heartbreaking loss of lives. These are not isolated incidents but a growing problem that we must address now before more families are shattered.

Despite the danger, Newport Beach has not yet updated its traffic regulations to protect its residents and visitors. The need for change became overwhelmingly clear to me after witnessing several near-fatal accidents in my own neighborhood. It has become an unbearable gamble every time someone steps outside, walks across the street, or simply attempts to enjoy the beauty of our coastal community.

Our proposal is to start with something actionable and immediately impactful—installing stop signs at critical intersections on the Balboa peninsula namely, 20th and Balboa Blvd., amongst many others. Implementing these measures will help manage traffic flow, reduce the likelihood of collisions, and ultimately save lives. According to the Federal Highway Administration, stop signs are a fundamental tool proven effective in regulating traffic at intersections with a high risk of accidents. 

The data also supports this: intersections with stop signs have consistently shown a decrease in vehicular accidents by about 40%. A simple measure? Yes. Effective? Absolutely. But it won’t happen without informed citizens taking a stand.

We cannot wait for another tragedy to strike before action is taken. I urge all Newport Beach residents, visitors, and anyone with a vested interest in the safety of our community to join this cause.
