The lack of passing lanes and few places to pull off for slower vehicles make driving here perilous. One must often make risky maneuvers to pass slow-moving trucks or motorhomes. Tragically, this road has been the site of numerous fatal accidents, including a recent heartbreaking incident involving a family of five.
Rice Road stretches 100 miles from Interstate 10 to Parker, Arizona, and it serves as a crucial link between California and Arizona. Despite its significance, it remains a mere two-lane road. It's a popular route for diesel trucks, motor homes, vehicles pulling trailers, and countless single vehicles, all competing for space with very limited options to pull out. The road's soft sand further limits safe turnouts, complicating travel and increasing danger.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, multi-vehicle accidents are more likely to occur on two-lane roads with heavy traffic. SR62 is a prime example where lack of infrastructure escalates risk.
