Make religion classes at BYU pass/fail

Make religion classes at BYU pass/fail
The Issue
Balancing a rigorous academic schedule with the required religion courses at Brigham Young University (BYU) has proven to be incredibly challenging. As BYU students, we find ourselves overwhelmed by the demanding classes necessary for our majors, all while trying to excel in the mandatory religion courses. This is not only our story, but a shared experience among many students navigating the already intense pressures of higher education.
At BYU, religion classes are a unique requirement that reflects the institution's principles and values. While I appreciate the importance of understanding religious teachings, the current grading system adds an unnecessary burden to students who are already stretched thin with their course loads. Transitioning these classes to a pass/fail grading system would alleviate this stress, allowing students to focus more on their major-related courses and gain a better overall college experience.
Research shows that pass/fail systems are beneficial in reducing stress and promoting mental well-being among students. Institutions like MIT and Harvard have implemented pass/fail systems in certain courses, leading to positive student feedback and improved academic performance. If elite universities recognize the value of alleviating student stress through modified grading policies, BYU should consider doing the same for religion classes.
Implementing a pass/fail system for religion courses would not imply a reduction in academic rigor or importance. Instead, it would acknowledge the diverse pressures students face and provide them with a supportive academic environment. By focusing on participation and comprehension rather than numerical grades, we can uphold the essence of these courses without compromising students' mental health and overall success.
By signing this petition, you show your support for a more balanced and empathetic academic framework at BYU. Let us work together to advocate for a change that will benefit the entire student body, fostering an educational atmosphere that values both academic and personal growth. Please sign and share this petition to make a real difference at BYU.
