Hi everyone,

Today is the International day to End Violence against Women. Street harassment is a form of gender-based violence and as such we want to make as much noise as possible about this issue. Check out our Instagram takeover of IWeigh where we’re going to be having a conversation about street harassment and mental health. If you want to join in on Facebook, Twitter or by commenting below the petition, use our hashtag #StopStreetHarassment & tell us:

  • How street harassment makes you feel
  • How street harassment affects your everyday life
  • If you have a mental health issue, how street harassment affects this

For me, street harassment is above all a source of fear. The anxiety I feel when in a public space by myself, at night especially, is directly tied to a number of instances of harassment I’ve faced. I know that for others street harassment has led them to have low self-esteem, and it can increase body image issues tied to weight or body hair for example. Street harassment has also been linked in the long term to anxiety and depression, particularly in cases of fondling and assault.

We want to use today to raise awareness about the real and important impacts of street harassment. Help us by joining the conversation, sharing the petition and following us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

Violence against women & girls is one of the world's most devastating form of human rights violation. But it doesn't have to be inevitable, and we should all be joining forces to end it.

In solidarity,

Maya
