Make public buses more accessible for individuals with additional needs
The Issue
My youngest brother is an incredible young man with additional needs who, like many, is striving towards independence. Unfortunately, he struggles with reading, and when he's told to "read the front of the bus" to identify which service has arrived, it only serves to heighten his anxiety and erode his confidence. This shouldn't be the experience of anyone wanting to utilise public transport, yet it is one we face time and again.
The simple act of boarding the right bus should not be a barrier to independence. For individuals with disabilities, including those who have difficulty reading, the current system is not inclusive and can often be frustrating and disheartening. Public transport is a vital lifeline, providing access to education, employment, and social connections. It should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their capabilities.
A practical solution would be the implementation of auditory announcements at bus stops and on buses themselves, similar to systems used in rail and metro services. These audio cues can help all passengers—not just those with visual impairments or reading difficulties—to more confidently and independently use public transportation, knowing they've boarded the correct service.
Moreover, such improvements are not unprecedented. Several cities have successfully adopted these measures, resulting in increased independence for individuals with additional needs and enhancing overall public satisfaction with the transport system.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more inclusive public transport system where people with additional needs can enjoy the same independence as everyone else. Let's push for auditory announcements on buses and at stations in our area. Together, we can help build a community that values accessibility and inclusion for all.
Please sign and help spread the word. Let's make our public transport system a beacon of inclusion and accessibility.
