Make Public Buildings in New York State Fully Accessible for Mobility-Impaired Individuals

The Issue

I depend on a wheelchair or mobility scooter for my day-to-day routine due to ease mobility issues. While I am grateful for the independence my scooter affords me, there are still places I can't go, buildings, and facilities that remain out of my reach. This is more than an inconvenience - it's a clear breach of my personal freedom.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique. In New York State, there are thousands of mobility-impaired individuals who confront this same issue every day. Public structures are meant to welcome everyone, yet the design of many of these buildings excludes those with mobility impairments. The problem stems from a lack of clear, standardized regulations for public building accessibility.

Our goal is simple: To make all public places, including buildings, facilities, and apartment complexes, fully accessible to those who are mobility impaired. By "fully accessible," we mean these places must provide handicapped parking spots, elevators or lifts where there are stairs, and doors that can be opened automatically or with a push button.

Implementing these changes will help empower individuals like myself and bring our city closer to being truly accessible for everyone. Each signature takes us a step closer to that goal. It could represent one more accessible building, one more barrier removed, and one more person empowered.

Businesses and those responsible for maintaining sidewalks, should reevaluate their ramps so they are easily used with a mobility aid, or someone who doesn't rely on aids, but may shuffle when they walk.
Please be a part of this positive change. Sign this petition and support our fight for equality, access, and independence.
