The Issue

I find it absolutely appalling that in our society, condoms are provided for free while period products remain out of reach for many who need them most. As a female, every month I see firsthand the struggle to afford essentials that are not a luxury, but a necessity. Period products are just as integral to women's health and hygiene as other free medical necessities, yet they remain an overlooked expense that not everyone can afford.

In the US, over 20 million women live below the federal poverty line, and research from the Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology reveals that two out of every five women struggle to afford period products. This isn't just a minor issue—it's a crisis of public health and dignity. Without adequate menstrual care, women are forced to use makeshift solutions like rags, socks, or even toilet paper, which can lead to serious health risks such as infections.

Scotland has already taken a ground-breaking step by making these products free for all. It's time for other regions to follow suit. By providing free period products, we reduce this monthly burden and allow women to maintain their dignity, stay in school, and continue to work without disruption.

We urge policymakers, local governments, and health offices to prioritize this issue. It's time to step up and make period products free for everyone in need. It's not just a matter of equality, but of basic human rights. Let’s usher in a change that acknowledges the essential needs of half the population.

Sign this petition to support free access to period products for all women, so that no one is left behind when it comes to managing their menstrual health with dignity and safety. Together, we can make a change that benefits all of society.
