Make Parking Free for Students and Faculty at Santa Clara University

The Issue

As a student at Santa Clara University, I, along with countless others, am burdened by the hundreds of dollars we have to pay each year just to get to school safely. We are not asking for a privilege, we are asking for a basic necessity, a right to education without incurring excessive costs. The irony is that while students and faculty are striving to make contributions to society through education and research, we are being taxed by that very institution we are part of. According to the university's transportation services, a general parking permit costs $300 per year. This is a significant burden on students and staff, especially when considering that many are already dealing with the high cost of tuition, living expenses, and other related education costs. Furthermore, more than one-third of undergraduate students operate on financial aid (source: Santa Clara University Financial Aid Office). These finances could be better invested into their books, nutritional needs, or savings. Therefore, we call on Santa Clara University to eliminate parking fees for its students and faculty, thus easing the financial burden borne by those who make our university community vibrant and productive. Please sign this petition to support accessible, fair, and equitable parking at Santa Clara University.
