Make parental alienation a crime in Iowa

Make parental alienation a crime in Iowa
The Issue
Growing up without a father was incredibly challenging. It’s an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. Despite my father's toxic absence, my mother tirelessly worked to keep him in my life, showing me what true resilience looks like. Meanwhile, I’ve seen many parents unfairly alienated from their children, enduring years without them. Friends of mine have been unjustly targeted, even facing the police for simply wanting to see their own kids. This isn't right, and something must change.
Parental alienation, which can be defined as one parent deliberately distancing the other from their children, isn't just harmful—it's life-altering for all involved, especially the children. Research highlights the devastating psychological impact on children who lose a parent due to alienation, including increased risks of depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues. In Iowa, this has led to countless children losing the invaluable presence of a loving parent in their lives, solely due to the malicious actions of the other.
This advocacy is about protecting those children and supporting those parents who wish to be involved, present, and loving. Despite its profound implications, Iowa has yet to formally address parental alienation as a punishable offense. By making it a crime, Iowa can become a beacon of hope for families enduring these disastrous circumstances.
We propose actionable changes starting with legislation that formally recognizes parental alienation as a criminal act. By imposing legal consequences, the state of Iowa can deter this harmful behavior and show solidarity with the affected families. Such laws will promote family unity, secure children's right to see both parents, and prevent the weaponization of parenthood in custody disputes.
Join us in urging the Iowa state legislature to act now. Let's ensure every child has the opportunity to grow up with the love and support of both parents in their lives. Sign this petition to demand justice for affected families and to safeguard the futures of countless children in Iowa.
