Make online multiplayer access free for console gamers
The Issue
As a passionate gamer, I've often found myself frustrated by the barriers to fully enjoying the games I've already purchased. After spending a significant amount of money on a console and individual game titles, the requirement to pay a recurring monthly fee to simply access online multiplayer modes feels unfair. I know many fellow gamers share this sentiment, and it's a source of widespread frustration across our community.
The current model adopted by major console manufacturers requires users to purchase a subscription to access online multiplayer features, essentially doubling the cost of gaming—paying for the game itself and then again for the right to play with others online. This is not only a financial burden for many but also a limitation on the community aspect of gaming, which thrives on shared experiences and teamwork.
Statistics show that the gaming industry is highly lucrative, with console gaming generating billions in revenue annually. Yet, the paywall for online multiplayer remains in place. If mobile and PC platforms can offer free access to multiplayer gaming, why can't consoles do the same?
We propose that console manufacturers revise their business models to make online multiplayer access part of the basic package or offer more affordable subscription options. By doing so, they would foster better community engagement, increase their user base, and make gaming more inclusive and accessible.
Other sectors have successfully adopted customer-friendly practices. Streaming services provide basic content access to paid members without added costs for essential features, and airlines include checked-in baggage within ticket prices. The gaming industry can learn from these examples and remove this unnecessary financial barrier.
By signing this petition, you are joining a call to action for gaming companies to make online multiplayer access free for console users, enhancing the enjoyment of gaming for everyone. Please sign and help us improve the gaming experience for all.
