Make NYC public schools remote on February 24, 2026
The Issue
Living in New York City, we understand all too well how a major blizzard can bring our city’s daily routines to a standstill. Past storms have demonstrated how quickly transportation systems, neighborhood parking, and yellow bus services become overwhelmed. These conditions create serious safety concerns for students, school staff, and families navigating hazardous roads and limited transit options.
By transitioning public schools to remote learning on February 24, 2026, the City can proactively protect our children and educators while easing the significant strain placed on our transportation infrastructure during severe winter weather. We have already seen that online instruction can be implemented effectively during weather-related closures and throughout the pandemic, ensuring continuity of learning without compromising safety.
We respectfully urge the New York City Department of Education to prioritize the well-being of students and staff by announcing a temporary shift to remote learning for that day. While any schedule adjustment presents challenges, establishing a clear plan in advance will allow for a seamless transition and minimize disruption.
We ask for your leadership in helping our city avoid preventable risks. Supporting a one-day move to remote instruction will safeguard our school communities while maintaining educational progress during severe winter conditions.
