The Issue

Every summer, New Jersey residents face an additional financial burden just to enjoy one of the state’s natural treasures—our beautiful beaches. Despite living in a state with some of the highest property and state taxes in the country, we find ourselves required to purchase costly "beach tags" for the mere privilege of stepping onto the sand. It is time to make a change.

New Jersey’s coastline stretches for 130 miles, boasting some of the most picturesque beaches on the east coast. They belong to all of us, yet residents from Cape May to Sandy Hook must dig deeper into their pockets to enjoy these public spaces because of beach tag fees. For many families, these additional costs can be prohibitive, limiting access to recreational opportunities and an essential relief from daily stress during summer months.

The introduction of free beach access would be a monumental step towards making New Jersey’s recreational areas more inclusive and reflective of our state’s value of community. Other states, including Florida and California, have managed to keep their beaches free and accessible, boosting local tourism and generating revenue through alternative means such as parking fees and concessions.

Economists argue that free public access can increase public interest and investment in local business, ultimately strengthening community ties and local economies. When more residents and visitors frequent beach towns, it creates a bustling economy—the ripple effects of which benefit everyone.

We must urge our local and state legislators to reconsider the financial barriers we have imposed on ourselves, barriers that limit our enjoyment of public lands and the pursuit of happiness. Let us come together as a community to ensure that New Jersey’s beaches remain accessible and free—a reflection of the natural beauty that is an integral part of our identity as residents.

Sign this petition to demand that our elected officials take action and make New Jersey beaches free for residents. Let’s make our voices heard and bring about a welcoming change for all New Jerseyans. Your signature can make a difference!
