Make Newroz (March 21st) a Recognized Cultural Holiday in New York and New Jersey State

Make Newroz (March 21st) a Recognized Cultural Holiday in New York and New Jersey State
The Issue
Newroz—also spelled Nowruz—means “new day,” and for millions of people across the globe, it represents exactly that: the beginning of spring, the Kurdish and Persian New Year, and a powerful celebration of hope, rebirth, and resistance.
Observed every year on March 21st, Newroz has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in Kurdish, Persian, Afghan, and Central Asian cultures. For Kurdish communities especially, Newroz is more than just a holiday—it is a symbol of resilience, freedom, and cultural identity passed down through generations.
In both New York and New Jersey, thousands of Kurdish-American and Middle Eastern families celebrate Newroz annually. Despite the growing presence and contributions of these communities, Newroz is not officially recognized by either state as a cultural holiday
That must change.
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the governments of New York and New Jersey to formally recognize March 21st as “Newroz Day”—either as an official cultural observance or commemorative holiday. This recognition can come in the form of a proclamation, legislative resolution, or inclusion in the states’ calendars of recognized cultural events.
Why Recognition Matters:
- It honors the identity, history, and contributions of Kurdish and Middle Eastern Americans
- It promotes diversity, inclusion, and cultural visibility in public institutions
- It ensures future generations see their heritage valued and respected
Newroz is about light overcoming darkness. It is about renewal after hardship. And it is about the universal hope for freedom, peace, and a better future. These are values that resonate far beyond any one community—and they deserve acknowledgment from the states our communities proudly call home.
This campaign is led by the Kurdish American Movement with support from advocates, allies, students, and families across both states. A formal proposal has been sent to lawmakers in New York and New Jersey, and your signature will help demonstrate the broad public support needed to move this forward.
By signing, you are saying:
- You support the recognition of Newroz as a cultural holiday on March 21st
- You stand with Kurdish, Persian, and Middle Eastern communities
- You believe inclusion, visibility, and representation matter
Let’s make Newroz visible. Let’s make it official. Sign and share today.
