Make Nevada Colleges Tuition-Free for 100% Disabled Veterans & Their Families

Make Nevada Colleges Tuition-Free for 100% Disabled Veterans & Their Families
The Issue
Nevada’s 100% disabled veterans and their dependents deserve full tuition waivers—no caps, no gaps.
Nevada is home to thousands of veterans who gave everything in service to our country. Yet, unlike Texas, California, and Washington, Nevada does not provide full tuition waivers for 100% disabled veterans and their dependents.
Currently, Nevada only offers limited waivers, such as the Purple Heart and National Guard programs. But there is no statewide tuition waiver for families of veterans who are permanently disabled due to their service. This leaves families struggling with tuition bills after GI Bill benefits expire or DEA stipends fall short.
We call on the Nevada Legislature, Governor, and NSHE Board of Regents to create the Nevada Tuition Waiver for 100% Disabled Veterans & Dependents.
What We’re Asking For:
Eligibility
- Veterans rated 100% service-connected disabled (including IU/P&T) by the VA.
- Must hold an honorable or general discharge.
- Dependents (spouse and children under 26, with reasonable extensions).
- Veterans must be Nevada residents, have entered service from Nevada, or served in Nevada (including the Nevada National Guard).
Coverage
- 100% of in-state tuition and mandatory fees waived at Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institutions.
- Applies to undergraduate and graduate programs.
- No credit-hour cap – because disabled veterans and their families should not be penalized for pursuing multiple degrees or retraining.
- No requirement to use federal benefits first – this waiver stands on its own, preserving GI Bill and DEA for housing stipends, books, or other needs.
Administration
- Simple application through NSHE Veterans Services.
- Annual NSHE reporting on participation and fiscal impact.
Why This Matters
Fairness & parity: Other veteran-friendly states already provide this benefit; Nevada should not lag behind.
Family support: Spouses and children bear the sacrifices of service too—education should not be one more burden.
Stronger Nevada workforce: More trained nurses, teachers, and skilled professionals staying in Nevada.
Veteran choice: Families keep their federal benefits intact, allowing them to cover housing, books, or graduate education instead of being forced to exhaust them first.
Honor & integrity: Requiring honorable or general discharge ensures the benefit goes to those who served with distinction, while tying eligibility to Nevada service/residency keeps the benefit rooted locally.
Call to Action
Nevada can do better. Our most severely disabled veterans and their families deserve full educational support without strings attached.
Sign this petition to urge Nevada lawmakers and the NSHE Board of Regents to pass the Nevada Tuition Waiver for 100% Disabled Veterans & Dependents in the 2025–2026 session.
