Make neurodiversity training mandatory for educators in Northern Ireland

Make neurodiversity training mandatory for educators in Northern Ireland
The Issue
As a parent of neurodiverse children, I've experienced firsthand the struggles and challenges they face in the education system. Each child is unique, and those with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, ADHD, DCD and dyslexia require understanding, patience, and tailored educational approaches. Unfortunately, in Northern Ireland, the training provided to teachers and teaching assistants is insufficient to adequately support these children's needs.
Our education system should be a place of inclusivity and equal opportunity for all students, yet the lack of comprehensive neurodiversity training poses a significant barrier to this goal. Unlike other regions in the UK, Northern Ireland falls behind in providing necessary resources for neurodivergent students, leading to a gap in support that affects not just educational outcomes, but the well-being and development of these children as well.
We call on educational institutions and governing bodies to prioritize in-depth, mandatory training in neurodiversity for all teachers and teaching assistants. This training should be an integral part of the initial PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) and teaching assistant qualification programs. Moreover, it should include annual refresher courses to ensure that our educators remain informed about the latest strategies and best practices in supporting neurodivergent pupils.
Establishing a registry of trained teaching assistants would further enhance accountability and ensure that those working with our children are properly equipped with the skills they need. The implementation of clear policies and procedures backed by legal frameworks will safeguard the rights of neurodivergent pupils, ensuring they receive appropriate and fair treatment in educational settings.
The human rights implications of neglecting the needs of neurodivergent children cannot be ignored. We must act now to ensure that every child in Northern Ireland has access to an education that acknowledges and accommodates their unique abilities.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for neurodiverse children across Northern Ireland. Let’s work together to make our education system one that truly embraces diversity and inclusivity. Please sign and share this petition to demand action and bring about positive change for our children.
