Make Mounjaro free on the NHS for women with PCOS
The Issue
For too long living with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has felt like fighting a ghost. It is a silent thief that affects 1 in 10 women in the UK, yet the awareness around it remains quiet, leaving many to struggle in the shadows. This common condition brings many challenges: weight gain, unwanted hair growth, hair thinning, hormonal imbalances, and infertility; over 70% of women in their childbearing years face infertility struggles due to PCOS, yet it remains without a known cure.
Living with PCOS isn’t just about the physical checklist of symptoms, it’s the deep, heavy toll it takes on your soul. Since my teens, I’ve felt the exhaustion of fighting a body that seems to be working against me. It’s the anxiety that creeps in, the depression that follows, and that heartbreaking, quiet fading of your own sense of femininity.
The current "solution" offered to us often feels like a dead end. We are frequently told to take birth control which can bring its own cloud of mood swings, severe mental health and physical health risks , or we are ignored until the moment we want to conceive and only then are we offered fertility drugs that carry their own set of complications such as the increased risk of multiple births and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
Many women report their symptoms are dismissed by medical providers or misdiagnosed to other factors, leading to an average diagnostic delay of several years.
We are more than just our ability to have children. We deserve to feel healthy, confident, and balanced every single day, not just when we are trying to start a family.
There is finally a beacon of hope: Mounjaro. While many see it only as a weight loss tool, for a woman with PCOS, it is a metabolic lifeline, to manage symptoms and gain control.
I would like to raise a petition, to make Mounjaro free on the NHS and accessible to every woman battling with PCOS.
PCOS is rooted in insulin resistance, a cycle that makes losing weight feel impossible and keeps our hormones in chaos. Mounjaro works by mimicking two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which change how our bodies process energy, by lowering insulin levels, the medication can help reduce excess androgens (male hormones).
The results aren’t just about numbers on a scale, Mounjaro can help with:
• Weight management/Loss
• Restoration of regular menstrual cycles.
• Reduction in acne and unwanted hair growth (hirsutism).
• Indirect Fertility Support: While not a fertility drug, the combined effect of weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity often leads to more predictable ovulation, which can enhance the chances of natural conception.
Science has shown that even a 5% reduction in weight and managing your insulin resistance, can dramatically improve PCOS symptoms.
In clinical trials, Mounjaro has shown the potential for much more. But right now, this life changing support is locked behind a paywall.
Your financial situation should not determine whether you get to feel "normal." I am calling on the NHS to provide free access to Mounjaro for women battling PCOS. It is time to move past a healthcare system that dismisses our pain and offers "band aid" solutions.
We are asking for more than just a prescription, we are asking for our lives back.
By signing this petition, you aren't just supporting a medical motion. you are standing with every woman who has ever felt invisible in a doctor's office. You are helping us reclaim our health, our femininity, and our futures.
Please, sign today. Help us make PCOS manageable for everyone, not just the few.
