The Issue

When my dermatologist informed me that Mounjaro could potentially be an invaluable treatment for my Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), it felt like a ray of hope. I was fortunate enough to try it privately, and during that period, my HS flares were under control, offering a glimpse into a life with less pain and more possibilities. However, the high cost of Mounjaro now places it beyond my financial reach. And sadly the NHS deny all applications for Mounjaro from Dermatologists within the trust who would like to try it for HS patients.

HS is a painful and chronic skin condition that affects many people across the UK. It creates multiple abscesses and scarring that can severely impact an individual's quality of life. While the exact cause of HS is still unknown, obesity has been identified as a significant risk factor for flares. This makes treatments that address weight management, like Mounjaro, both relevant and essential for individuals like me who are trying to manage our symptoms and overall health.

The emotional and financial toll of living with HS and other chronic illnesses, such as ulcerative colitis, is immense. These conditions not only affect my daily life but also my ability to work and provide for myself. With the price of Mounjaro being prohibitively high, many, like myself, cannot privately afford this treatment despite its proven effectiveness.

By making Mounjaro accessible through the NHS, we would be addressing a critical healthcare need and improving the quality of life for countless individuals struggling with HS. It is imperative that the NHS recognises the importance of having a comprehensive treatment regime for HS that includes options like Mounjaro. Recent studies and clinical trials support its efficacy in managing weight and subsequently reducing HS flare-ups. Comprehensive healthcare should be a right, not a privilege limited by one’s financial situation. It should still potentially come with criteria for prescribing, such as BMI, as MJ may not be suitable for those within a healthy range. Preliminary studies and patient surveys on GLP-1/GIP medications have shown promising results, noting a reduction in HS systemic inflammation, flare frequency, and systemic pain.

It is time for the NHS to extend their resources and support to the HS community by adding Mounjaro to the list of available treatments. I call on healthcare decision-makers and policy influencers to consider this inclusion seriously, as it would not only alleviate suffering but also empower patients with effective and necessary care.

Sign this petition to advocate for affordable access to Mounjaro on the NHS, ensuring that effective treatments for Hidradenitis Suppurativa are within reach for everyone who needs them.
