Make MLS Next Affordable and Add More Teams in Long Island

Make MLS Next Affordable and Add More Teams in Long Island
The Issue
Driving around Long Island to catch MLS matches often turns into a marathon experience. The long hours behind the wheel can be exhausting, especially with the heavy traffic and the constant search for parking. Each trip takes a toll on my time and my wallet, as gas prices keep climbing. I sometimes wonder if it’s worth it when I could be saving money if there were local teams here.
The absence of Major League Soccer (MLS) teams on Long Island forces many fans like myself to travel to distant locations, often outside Long Island or into New York City. This not only increases the cost for families and individuals wanting to support their teams but also excludes many potential fans who cannot afford the time or money to make such trips.
Long Island is a vibrant community with a deep love for soccer, yet it's underserved in terms of accessible MLS Next options. Establishing more MLS Next teams in areas like Garden City or Hempstead could bring the excitement of live matches closer to home. This would allow local families to participate in the sport they love without the added burdens of travel.
Moreover, the existing MLS Next programs need to become more affordable. Lowering the cost will make soccer accessible to a broader demographic, ensuring that our children have the opportunity to engage in healthy sports activities.
Having more teams in the area could also boost the local economy by creating jobs and increasing local commerce, from merchandise sales to food vendors during match days.
I urge the MLS authorities and local stakeholders to consider this proposal, which supports not only the fans but also the community at large.
