Make menstrual products free in India

Make menstrual products free in India

The Issue

Growing up in India, I witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by underprivileged women due to the lack of access to safe and hygienic menstrual products. Menstruation is not something a woman chooses; it is a natural biological process that occurs every month. Despite this, millions of women in India continue to suffer in silence because they cannot afford the basic menstrual products necessary for their health and dignity.

According to UNESCO, one in five girls in India drops out of school due to menstruation-related issues, primarily because they lack access to proper menstrual hygiene facilities. This not only affects their education but perpetuates the cycle of poverty and gender inequality. The ramifications of inadequate menstrual care extend beyond education, affecting women's health and economic productivity.

Furthermore, a report by WaterAid and PATH revealed that only 12% of India's menstruating women have access to sanitary products. This stark reality is not just a health crisis but a glaring inequality that needs urgent redressal. The absence of affordable and accessible menstrual products places women at risk of infection, social ostracization, and psychological stress.

The Government of India has the power to change this narrative. By making menstrual products free and accessible to all women, we can ensure that no woman has to choose between her health and other essentials. This action would not only safeguard women's health but also promote gender equality and women's empowerment on a national scale.

The time has come to recognize menstrual products as a basic necessity, rather than a luxury, and to ensure their accessibility across India. We can achieve this through government funding, local community distribution programs, or partnerships with NGOs to reach even the most remote areas.

Join me in urging the Government of India to take decisive action. Let's make menstrual products free and accessible, ensuring every woman can manage her menstrual health with dignity. Sign this petition to support equal access to menstrual care for all women in India.

Together, we can make a difference and build a future where no woman is left behind due to her period.
