The Issue

I recently stumbled upon a story on social media that truly opened my eyes. It came from a young teen who shared her family’s financial struggles. What struck me the most was her heartbreaking account of cutting up an old shirt into strips to use as a sanitary pad, simply because her family could not afford to purchase pads or tampons. This story is not an isolated incident; it represents a widespread crisis affecting many individuals today.

For too long, the issue of affordability regarding feminine menstrual products has been overlooked. Many young girls and adults face the agonizing challenge of choosing between buying essential menstrual products and putting food on the table. In a developed society, no individual should have to make such a choice. Menstruation is a natural biological process, yet it is unfairly treated as a luxury, with products necessary for basic health and hygiene still carrying a cost burden.

In the UK, studies indicate that one in ten girls have been unable to afford menstrual products. Even more alarming, 12% of women in the UK have resorted to using socks, t-shirts, or other unsafe alternatives because they couldn't access proper sanitary products. These statistics underscore the dire need for intervention and reform. Such conditions are not only a public health concern but also a violation of basic human rights.

Many countries are taking progressive steps, with Scotland leading the way by making sanitary products free for all, acknowledging them as essential as toilet paper. We must follow suit and push for similar legislation throughout the UK. Menstrual equity is a stepping stone towards gender equality and accessible healthcare for all.

We propose that the UK government implements a scheme to provide free menstrual products in schools, colleges, universities, and public places, ensuring that no one has to face humiliation, stress, or health risks due to lack of access. Such an initiative could be sustained through reallocating funds and partnerships with NGOs focused on women's health.

By signing this petition, you stand with us in urging the UK government to recognize and act on this urgent need. Let us join hands to ensure future generations grow up in a country where menstruation does not impede opportunity or dignity. Together, we can create change.

Please sign this petition today and help make menstrual products accessible and free for everyone in the UK.
