Make Macclesfield town centre safe.

Make Macclesfield town centre safe.
The Issue
As a local resident I have long been a frequent visitor to the heart of our community, the bustling town centre of Macclesfield. It is here where families gather, friends meet. However, a pressing concern is our supposed pedestrian-friendly area that's marred by the constant passage of vehicles, posing a genuine threat to public safety.
Currently, cars are allowed unrestricted access to the town centre when the council decide that the gates are either locked or not , thus turns what should be a lively pedestrian zone into a dangerous traffic thoroughfare. On Sundays, a day many dedicate to leisure and family, this issue is particularly pronounced. It is remarkable to know that traffic is not subjected to a speed limit of less than 30 MPH and to feel the ominous presence of vehicles that undermine the sanctuary our town ought to be.
In the warmer months of spring and summer, the town centre becomes our community's nucleus, a place where families come together, shop, and enjoy each other's company. Unfortunately, the constant flow of traffic significantly detracts from the pleasurable experience it should be.
I suggest that Cheshire East Council take action by amending the traffic management order to restrict vehicular access to the town centre on Sundays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This change would transform the area into a true pedestrian haven, allowing families and individuals to enjoy the town centre without the looming threat of vehicles.
This proposal is not only about enhancing public safety but also about enriching the social and economic vibrancy of our town centre. Many cities globally have successfully implemented pedestrian-only days, resulting in increased foot traffic to local businesses and a stronger sense of community.
According to a recent study, areas with restricted vehicle access saw a reduction in accidents by over 20% and reported increased satisfaction among visitors and residents alike. By implementing this change, Cheshire East can bolster its reputation as a forward-thinking community that prioritizes the safety and well-being of its residents.
I urge you to join me in calling on the Cheshire East Council to take this crucial step forward. Let's work together to protect our community and our cherished town centre. Sign this petition and lend your voice to the movement for safer, more enjoyable Sundays in Cheshire.
