Make Lymphoedema Bras free on NHS prescription - we didn't ask for this!!

The Issue

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2022, went through 6 months of chemotherapy, surgery and 20 rounds of radiation. I was 34. This has changed my life forever.

After surgery I was diagnosed with having severe lymphoedema in my breast and ribs area. After going to sessions at my local lymphoedema clinic at St Catherines Hospice, I was told I need to purchase a couple of bras to help aid drainage within the lymphatic system. I was then handed a catalogue. After having a browse through and then finally picking a couple of bras, I was told I had to purchase these as they were not included on the prescription list. This shocked me. Medically I needed this. This wasn't my choice.

If I had lymphoedema in my arm, I would be able to be given a tube grip, if I had swelling in my leg I would be given a tube grip, but not my breast, as 'all women need to buy a bra.'

About 1 in 5 people (20%) will have lymphoedema of the arm after breast cancer treatment that includes:

1. Surgery to remove lymph nodes

2. Radiotherapy to the lymph nodes

If lymphoedema is not treated, it may get worse. It can be painful and make it difficult to move your arm.

Lymphoedema is a long-term condition, which means that once it has developed it can be controlled but is unlikely to ever go away completely.

Help sign the petition to make it mandatory to receive a bra that aids lymphatic draining.

No body needs this expense. Cancer can be a financial burden as it is.

Thank you
