I have seen first-hand the devastating impacts of appearance-based discrimination, also known as "lookism." For too long, this systemic issue has been overlooked, leaving countless individuals vulnerable to bias and prejudice solely based on how they look. This type of discrimination is particularly harmful in areas like healthcare and public life, where critical decisions are influenced by superficial judgments.

In healthcare settings, many, especially women, find themselves being dismissed or not taken seriously by professionals who make decisions based on appearance rather than symptoms or concerns. A striking example includes bias towards patients who 'look healthy' and are consequently not given the medical attention they require. This discrimination not only jeopardizes immediate health but can also lead to long-term physical and psychological harm.

In the workplace, the scenario is no less grim. Numerous studies indicate that individuals perceived as more attractive often receive preferential treatment, higher salaries, and more career advancement opportunities than those who do not fit conventional standards of beauty. According to a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, attractive workers earn 10-15% more on average than their less attractive counterparts, exacerbating economic disparities.
