Hi everyone!
First and foremost, I want to thank all of you for your support with this petition and trying to keep LMU safe. I spoke with the Chief of Public Safety this evening about the possibility of making LMU a closed campus again. He filled me in with some very important information.
Loyola Marymount University has an MOU (master plan) with the city of Westchester. The MOU includes an agreement with Westchester community members that states that they have equal access to the university since it is placed in their community. The President's Cabinet creates and modifies policies for the MOU, and makes sure to discuss these policies with the community.
My main concern with LMU being an open campus is how they will no longer be monitoring who comes in and out. I asked the Chief of Public Safety if we could implement this action. He stated his point of view which was how making security stricter could make students and faculty on campus feel marginalized. Even though our intention is to keep LMU safe, it is important to keep this in mind.
My biggest message in all of this is to let LMU students know that campus is open again and to please stay safe. However, I urge us to contact the President's Cabinet if we feel that change needs to happen.
