Make Learning Great Again
The Issue
Students are heavily impacted by Securly AI, blocking all of the searches done on Chromebooks. These students continually go searching for different sites to play games, do research, listen to music, and answer questions for school. As high school students, we are heavily impacted by this tyranny. Our parents bought these Chromebooks for us to succeed in school and do our work. Unable to do our work because we cannot Google anything because of Securly, our grades will suffer. Securly for Classroom lets our teachers spy on us to make sure we're doing our work. It hasn't affected our research yet, but the Securly for Chromebooks has affected us greatly. It blocks almost everything we look up.
We should have some sites unblocked. Here’s our reasoning:
When a site is blocked, it says it’s for distractions. But in reality, us looking for game websites is probably more distracting than just playing games. I understand personal blocks for when the student is playing way too much, but we’re spending more time looking for ways around the blocks than we would just using a site that is allowed.
I understand blocking games like Grand Theft Auto or Fortnite because their content isn’t very good (or not good for our well-being), but games like Cookie Clicker or Slope have nothing objectionable and have no reason to be blocked.
Also, things like Google Chat don’t have bad stuff anyway. You have to invite people to chat with by their email, so random people can’t just start chatting with you. This shouldn’t be blocked either.
I understand that Reddit should be blocked, but whenever we search for something and its first option is Reddit, the search is blocked. Research is so much harder because of this.
However, because these are still technically our Chromebooks, we should at least have access to a majority of things, not just the tiny number of things that haven’t been blocked.
These are our Chromebooks, so we should at least have some say in what is blocked. Even if it’s a little.
There is so little that we can search up now, thanks to Securly. I tried to look up something that I needed for biology about insects adapting and becoming resistant to different pesticides, and it was blocked by the keyword. Why? I don’t even know.
Also, about 90% of Google searches are now blocked because searches that have Gemini or have Reddit or other blocked links as the first result are blocked which also makes research almost impossible.
Securly uses its AI to block websites. Because the school faculty doesn’t do it themselves, many things that shouldn’t be blocked are blocked for no reason.
With just about every website blocked thanks to whatever restriction, our Chromebooks are nothing more than oversized TI-84s.
Music helps kids think and do their work better. Having music sites blocked can lead to us kids looking for sites to download music. Having access to Spotify or AudioMack can help us focus on our work and help us get it done faster. Some studies show that music can help memory, improve hand-eye coordination, and improve mood and mental health.
To me, for example, music helps my work exponentially. Music helps me concentrate. If I can’t focus, where will my grades go? How about down. Straight down.
If a student is playing games and their grades are terrible, why don’t you just block games for them until their grades improve? Would this not encourage them to improve their GPA? Maybe have a standard to have games unblocked. Maybe it could be around 3.5 or so.
Games are perfectly fine as long as they don’t have inappropriate content or are distracting from work.
Maybe it should be like some (not the amount there is now, though) things should be blocked during school, but after school (except for the obvious), a lot more websites should be unblocked.
You can still observe what we are doing and stuff, which is the main purpose of Securly, but at the same time, we have a lot more freedom using our chromebooks.
Because let us be honest, that gnome gets annoying after a while. Students will quickly get irritated and determined by seeing the blocking page come up. So this leads to them trying to find more sites.
When doing a research project or assignment, we need to look things up. If we can’t have access to viable sources because they are blocked, we can’t get our work done and it leads to our grades dropping.
There are so many sites blocked, likely a lot of them are because of Securly’s AI. However, that is just about everything out of reach, and how can we check if certain sources are credible if there are no other sources to compare them to?
The Securly AI doesn’t block specific things. It follows the programming of what it’s told and blocks everything in its path. Not having access to what we need to get better grades can make us suffer along with our grades.
Securly blocks almost everything, including things that are helpful for research. Half of the websites that I have looked up are blocked under “Other Adult Content”. I mean, what does that even mean?
Some websites are blocked under “Educational Games”. However, there are websites that the school knows about that aren’t blocked, even though they, too, have educational games. This makes no sense.
In conclusion, we believe that Securly blocks way too much useful material and sites that have no reason to be blocked. We also state that there should be one, if not a couple, game websites (that have unobjectionable games) that are unblocked. There is simply way too much material on the internet that is blocked. We could use so much but Securly decides that it isn’t beneficial and should be blocked.
