Tony Krajewski Thurmond is an American politician and educator, currently serving as the 28th California State Superintendent of Public Instruction since 2019. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Thurmond was first elected to this position in 2018, narrowly defeating Marshall Tuck, and was reelected in 2022. Prior to his current role, Thurmond represented the 15th Assembly District in the California State Assembly from 2014 to 2018, covering the northern East Bay. His educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Temple University and dual Master's degrees in Law and Social Policy, Social Work, and Social Service, Social Work from Bryn Mawr College. Thurmond has also served as a Richmond City Councilmember, a Board Member at West Contra Costa Unified School District, and in various roles focused on community and government relations.
