HELP STOP OUT OF CONTROL DOGS (OR THEIR OWNERS?)

The Issue

With a growing number of dog attacks on people and other animals including other dogs, sheep, cats, horses, etc. Isn’t is time we put something sensible in place?

Banning a specific breed won’t help the situation as the problem is often the owners themselves.

For anyone who has tried to adopt a dog they will know there are lots of assessments that take place to find a correct match for the dog as well as the owner. Different dogs have different needs and should be properly considered individually.

A lot of people will agree that they have bought instead of adopted because there are ‘too many hoops to jump through’, but just consider maybe the charities are right? Maybe you’re not suitable for the dog? Maybe you do work too many hours, you live in a tiny apartment, you have just had a baby, you have a cat, you aren’t very mobile… Some dogs are just not suited to those situations and that’s where the problems can begin.

The amount of out of control dogs of all breeds are visible to most on a daily basis at the local park. Sometimes it is an XL Bully and sometimes it’s a Cockerpoo. Obviously there is a big difference between the XL Bully being out of control and a Cockerpoo being out of control, but the principle is the same, a potential menace.

If all breeds were registered, and licences were granted to responsible owners after training and suitability assessments, there would be fewer attacks, and a lot less cruelty for dogs in general.

If it were law that to purchase or adopt a dog you had to apply for a licence and attend training sessions until you were competent, like the KC good citizen award scheme, there would be many people who might have second thoughts and perhaps reconsider before jumping in and picking a breed they liked the look of from the internet, and instead finding a suitable companion that works with their own life and capabilities.

With a register in place this could help tackle the dog attack problem, it could help stop ‘backyard breeders.’ It would reduce neglect, and the strain on the rescue centres that take in so many impulse bought animals that haven’t worked out. As well as supporting responsible owners, and not punishing them for owning a dog simply based on its breed type.

I would like to believe all responsible dog owners should have no problem signing this petition. Who doesn’t want the best for their dogs and the canine population in general?

Thanks for the support.
