Make It Illegal to Hit and Run a Cat in the UK — Stop and Report

The Issue

Hi, I’m 25 years old and I've personally witnessed several incidents where cats were hit by cars, left injured or lifeless on the roadside, with no one having the common decency to stop and check on them or inform the owners. It's a gut-wrenching sight, knowing that a beloved pet might be waiting for care that never comes. These incidents have become all too common and highlight a glaring gap in our legal system.

In many jurisdictions, while damage to property and harm to people from hit-and-run accidents are criminal offenses, animals are often overlooked. Pets are not just animals; they are family members, offering emotional support and unconditional love. When a driver hits an animal, be it a stray or a cherished pet, and leaves the scene without reporting or seeking help, they are committing an act that should be recognized and penalized by law.

We propose that laws be amended to make failing to report an animal hit-and-run a punishable offense. This could include fines, mandatory community service at animal shelters, or even license points. By enforcing such laws, we ensure that drivers think twice before leaving a suffering animal behind and take responsibility for their actions.

Data from various animal welfare organizations show that thousands of pets are hit by vehicles annually. In regions where reporting is enforced, the number of unresolved hit-and-run cases involving animals has significantly decreased, proving that legislative action can indeed lead to positive change.

Let's advocate for laws that ensure accountability, protect our pets, and demonstrate compassion on our roads. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to recognize the importance of penalizing hit-and-run offenses against animals, helping to prevent unnecessary suffering and loss. Thank you.
