The Issue

I live in a city where affluence is the norm and money isn't a problem for most families. However, I’ve seen firsthand how this city’s wealth can obscure the struggles of those less fortunate. Recently, several students at our local high school were denied the opportunity to purchase homecoming tickets because their school fees, which can run into the hundreds of dollars, were unpaid. It was heartbreaking to witness these students being punished for something beyond their control - their financial situation.

Education is supposed to be an equalizer, a place where students from all walks of life come to learn, grow, and cherish lifelong memories. Unfortunately, these financial policies are hindering this promise, creating a barrier that prevents some students from participating in crucial social and developmental activities. Extracurricular events like sports, homecoming, and prom are not luxury add-ons but essential components of a well-rounded education that foster teamwork, leadership, and social skills.

Currently, policies in place make it legal for schools to bar students from participating in extracurricular activities if they have unpaid fees. However, this is a gross injustice. These practices exacerbate inequality, punishing students socially and emotionally for financial challenges that are not their fault. Instead, schools should use other means to address non-payment of fees, such as setting up payment plans or offering fee waivers to those in need.

In a society that values education and equal opportunities, it is unacceptable to let financial constraints dictate a child's high school experience. We must call on legislators and educational boards to make it illegal for schools to restrict students from participating in any extracurricular activities based on unpaid fees. Such a law will ensure that all students, regardless of their economic background, have the chance to enjoy and benefit from the full spectrum of their educational environment.

If you agree that it's time to take a stand and make high school experiences inclusive for everyone, please support and sign this petition. Let’s advocate for change and ensure that no child is left out due to circumstances they cannot control.
