Make Indigenous Languages compulsory in Primary and Secondary schools

The Issue

In the South Western part of Nigeria, at least 15 percents of pupils get depressed, traumatised and bullied every year because of their inability to speak the English language which is the official language of the federal republic Nigeria.

Nigeria is a multi tribal state, where 80 percent of kids were raised with the understanding of their local languages, therefore our native languages should not be termed as vernacular in schools. Countries like
India, China and South Korea still use their local languages and dialects as their official languages till today.

If the pupils in our places of learning are be allowed to learn and speak in their indigenous languages, it will enhances learning, it will reduce the stigmatization and bullying to a very low rate, and it will also
encourage the students to be more open and confident.

I am calling on the Honourable Minister of education to direct the following in public primary and secondary schools nationwide:

1. Make the teaching of our indigenous languages compulsory in our primary and secondary places of learning.

2. Make our indigenous languages official in all primary, secondary places of leaning and other government institutions.

Please sign this petition to support my request to the Minister.
