The Tamil Nadu High Court in the year 2017 ordered the Tamil Nadu curriculum framework committee to incorporate a subject on animal welfare. Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar passed this much needed direction in response to the petition filed by the founder of People for Cattle in India (PFCI) Arun Prasanna. According to Arun the incidents of cruelties against animals in India is majorly because of ignorance of animal laws. He is also of the opinion that the children who abuse animals later turn into violent criminals. According to his lawyer Kaushik N Sharma, Arun approached the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to introduce a subject on animal welfare in schools to which the board gave it's approval. But when Arun approached with the same proposal to the Tamil Nadu curriculum framework committee, the committee failed to respond. Hence, Arun aporoached the Court.

The correspondent of the this report Laasya Shekhar spoke to around 15 children in the age group of 8 to 16 years and she found that most of them find pelting stones at dogs and tying their tails with stones as their favourite time pass. A school Principal Mohan Chander is of the opinion that apart from teaching animal welfare in schools the students should also be taken on field trips to animal welfare organizations.
This is indeed a great move forward towards making India and it's young minds animal friendly. This will help in bringing a major transformation in India because it is not only the students who will learn compassion towards animals but also their teachers and parents who unfortunately at present have failed in inculcating the feeling of compassion and empathy towards the voiceless souls amongst the young minds of India.
