While the entire nation criticised the killing of a pregnant elephant in Kerala, the Indian environment minister and the Indian media too strongly condemned the killing and also demanded justice for the elephant and her unborn baby.
On the other hand it is being reported that after the permission by the environment ministry, trees have been cut in 16 hectare untouched land in elephant reserve to make way for coal mining in the state of Assam.
This came as a revelation when an eastern Assam based environmentalist Rohit Choudhury filed a right to information application into the Tikok coal mining project in the Dehing Patkal elephant reserve. For details kindly go on the link below:

The environment ministry has got around 30 projects passed in a rush bypassing all guidelines and protocols which are necessary to get green projects passed. Kindly go on the following link to read about the rush they are into to get these Draconian projects passed:
How hypocrite can our environment ministry be. In Kerala they are criticising the killing of an elephant and in Assam they are busy converting a proposed elephant reserve into a mining field by cutting trees and destroying the rich flora and fauna of the area.
On 6th June 2020 a pregnant cow being fed aloo bomb ( fire cracker) in a dough went viral on social media and by evening the culprit got arrested. But not many know that the gruesome incident had taken place on 26th May and no one was arrested and no action was taken. It was Saturday morning when the owner of the cow posted the incident on social media that things started happening and by evening the culprit got arrested. The cow has given birth to a calf but she can't eat anything even now as her jaw is badly injured. She is surviving on glucose.
Just like Kerala in Himachal Pradesh too farmers use aloo bomb ( fire crackers) to kill wild boars. This may be a shocking news to people like us but not to local people of Himachal. They have been doing this for past many years.
For a detailed report kindly go on the link below:
What has happened to we humans? How casually people in Kerala and Himachal Pradesh are using bombs to kill wild boars. How can man be so cruel to give such a cruel and painful death to any living being?
Isn't it a shame that such cruel practices are happening against animals in India and the environment ministry is not even aware of it? Well right now it's paving way for mining, highways, dams, railway tracks etc. It's so busy making plans for urbanisation and unsustainable development that it has lost touch with flora and fauna of this country.
We have recently witnessed it's role in COVID 19 when dogs and cats were being abandoned and are still being abandoned in India. We have witnessed it's role when dogs were being killed and poisoned due to fear of COVID 19 and are still being killed either due to COVID 19 or due to fear of rabies.
Has the environment ministry ever done any kind of campaign for adopting street animals in India?
What steps did it take to stop people from abandoning their dogs which unfortunately even today people are abandoning in India due to fear of COVID 19?
Every day a dog is beaten to death, burnt or poisoned. This is a punishable offence but what has the environment ministry done to create awareness about this law. Everyday caregivers have to fight with there own neighbours to protect their furry friends from being relocated or tortured. What has the ministry done to ease their pain.
To my knowledge it has done nothing. If anyone can throw light on their pro animal policies or pro dog policies then kindly enlighten us.
What kind of ministry is this? It should change its name from environment ministry to "kill environment for development ministry"
Well if we talk about Indian media they seem to be more interested in what ministers, politicians, film actors do and say in India than the animals and forest of India. They are least bothered about animal cruelty. The cow was injured on 26 May but only when the video went viral on social media, the Indian television news channels took notice of it and we can see the spectacular results. The same was the case of the elephant in Kerala. The television news channel have played a very crucial role in getting justice for both the unfortunate animals.
Dog cruelty is quite common in India but our news channels don't find that worthy to be shown on their channels. They need not show the cruelty videos but at least they can report the incident. Ask for justice and punishment for the culprit. If only our media was alert and took animal cruelty seriously then probably such unfortunate incidents would have never happened.
There is a wonderful piece written by Rohit Khilnani which is titled "Is the Indian media doing enough for animal welfare". He wrote it in Dec 2016 and unfortunately what he wrote about the media holds true even today.
He has very bluntly and honestly talked about how the Indian media has failed the man's best friend and also the caregivers who are the unsung heroes and have been silently suffering with their four legged friends. Kindly go to the following link to read the article:
Personally I welcome the new face of Indian television and the journalists who have come forward to bring justice to the unfortunate animals who were tortured for no reason at all. The media has a power to change the mindset of the people and the country itself. With the power they have, they can either build a nation or destroy it. We have yet to see what our media has chosen? Destruction or nation building.
