The Kerala Chief Minister surprised the world when he made an appeal to his public to feed the stray dogs in the state. It was a surprise because the same state in 2015 had ordered culling of the dogs and thousands of dogs were butchered.
This time it is the judiciary of Kerala which has surprised the world with it's remarkable and empathetic judgement towards the voiceless creatures of the Earth
The petitioner N.Prakash had three cats and two kittens as pets. His cats ate only Meo-Persian biscuits. These biscuits were available only at a pet hospital in Cochin for which he had to go in his vehicle. But due to lockdown he was stopped by the police. Hence, he filed a petition in the high court of Kerala to allow him passage to buy cat food for his pets
The Division bench comprising of justices A.K. Jayasankaran Nambiar & Shaji P. Chaly gave a ruling in favour of the petitioner and thus allowed him to go and fetch the food for his pets during the lockdown. The judges also gave an observation in their judgement which is as follows:
"To inculcate a healthy respect for other living creatures, and to recognize the rights enuring in them, is thus no longer a matter of choice for our citizenry, but a solemn duty under the constitution that governs us all"
