Make HSC Business Studies Exams Fair: Provide Formula Sheets

The issue

As a student passionate about fairness in examinations, I am urging New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) to consider the inclusion of formula sheets during the HSC Business Studies external exams. This seemingly small addition can have profound effects on the academic success of many students, particularly those who face challenges like ADHD and other mental illnesses that affect memory retention.

During my high school journey, I have encountered and empathised with several classmates who struggle greatly due to intense exam stress. The fear and anxiety around potentially forgetting essential formulas and ratios needed for financial statements are palpable. It's heartbreaking to witness peers disadvantaged not by their lack of understanding, but by an avoidable shortfall in examination design.

Allowing formula sheets can level the playing field, enabling all students to focus more on applying their knowledge rather than memorising complex formulas. This shift will not only boost confidence but also potentially improve overall results. This approach is already supported in other education systems, where memory aids improve performance and reduce exam-related stress. Furthermore, formula sheets already prevail in mathematics exams, ranging from numeracy to two-unit levels, for HSC exams. This undoubtedly reveals that NESA is capable of providing such memory aids however decides to neglect a core aspect of Business Studies course outcomes; understanding over memorisation.

Further supporting this, statistics show that students with disabilities often score lower in high-pressure testing situations. The American Psychological Association indicates that accommodations such as formula sheets have notably improved outcomes for students with ADHD, helping to bridge the gap between ability and achievement.

This change is both realistic and actionable. By implementing formula sheets, NESA can uphold its commitment to equitable education, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. I urge you to consider the profound impact this simple provision can have on mental health and academic performance.

I urge the Hon. Prue Car and NESA to take action on this issue.

Sign this petition to make formula sheets available in HSC Business Studies exams and contribute to a fairer, more inclusive system for all students.
