Make hotel rooms more accessible for the safe use of Hoyer Lifts For Transferring
The Issue
Hello,
When I travel, I need to be able to transfer safely using a hoyer lift in hotel rooms. Unfortunately, many hotels lack the necessary space and accommodations to facilitate the use of these essential devices. This makes it incredibly challenging and often unsafe for individuals who rely on hoyer lifts for personal mobility, to enjoy the simple pleasure of traveling or staying away from home.
Unfortunately, when I cannot be transferred safely, I have to sleep in my wheelchair, which is challenging, painful and very unhealthy for me. While travelling recently, I had to sleep in my wheelchair, because the hoyer lift could not get under the bed in order for me to be transferred in the safest way possible.
Hoyer lifts are crucial for the safe transfer of individuals with mobility impairments. They are designed to assist caregivers in lifting and moving patients with ease, but the lack of adequate space and accessibility features in hotel rooms can severely limit their use. According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, accessibility remains a top barrier for people with disabilities when traveling. Without proper accommodations, the independence and safety of individuals with disabilities are compromised.
To address this gap, hotels can equip rooms with widened doorways, reinforced ceilings for lift mechanisms, and adequately sized bathrooms to ensure the safe use of hoyer lifts. Implementing these changes not only adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements but also opens the hotel industry to a broader clientele. By making these improvements, hotels can set a new standard of hospitality that prioritizes inclusion and safety for all guests.
Join me in advocating for this vital change by signing this petition. Let’s encourage hotels to make the necessary modifications to their guest rooms, so everyone has the opportunity to travel with confidence and dignity. Your signature can make a difference in pushing for a future where travel is accessible to everyone.
Thank you so much for your support. You are loved!
