The Issue

Throughout my academic career, particularly during my 7th grade year, I have been overwhelmed by hours upon hours of homework in one night, only to be confronted with another stack the very next day. This relentless cycle of excessive homework has not only affected my personal well-being but has also hindered my ability to actively engage in other beneficial activities such as sports, arts, and spending vital time with family.

The Downingtown Area School District (DASD) policy should emphasize quality over quantity when it comes to homework. Numerous studies have shown that an excessive amount of homework leads to diminished student performance and increased stress levels among students. The American Psychological Association notes that students who spend more than 90 minutes on homework per night often experience increased stress and other negative impacts on their health and social lives.

Moreover, research from Stanford University highlights that the ideal amount of homework for students should be 10 minutes per grade level, suggesting that middle school students, like myself in 7th grade, should not be burdened with more than 70 minutes of homework per night. Currently, DASD students frequently face double or even triple this recommended amount.

Excessive homework can lead to burnout and a disinterest in learning. It's crucial for DASD to foster an environment where students are eager to learn and have the necessary time to explore their interests outside of traditional academics.

I propose that DASD revise their homework policies to align with educational research. By capping the amount of homework to adhere to the 10-minute rule and ensuring assignments are meaningful and purposeful, students can maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal interests, leading to better overall academic performance.

Join me in urging DASD to consider these facts and make a change for a healthier and more balanced educational journey for all students. Please sign this petition to help create an improved academic environment where we can excel without compromising our well-being and happiness.
