The Issue

Every morning during school days, I stand in my doorway at my house on KY HWY 109, a road that locals know as Hospital Rd., and watch as my child boards a school bus. The anticipation should be filled with routine, not anxiety. Yet, I often find myself holding my breath as vehicles race past, sometimes overtaking each other recklessly, ignoring the presence of school buses stopped to pick up children or speeding to pass them before they have a chance to even get the stop sign out. This situation has reached a critical level of danger, not only for my child but also for the approximately ten other children who rely on this bus service.

The issue here is not merely the inconvenience or fear of parents but a serious safety hazard. KY HWY 109 has become a speedway for aggressive drivers, including large semi-trailers that disturb the supposed tranquility of a neighborhood where children play and live. Passing zones on this road have become hotbeds of potential accidents, putting our kids at risk as they embark and disembark from their bus rides.

School buses are specifically marked and utilize stop signs and flashing lights, yet time and again, drivers flagrantly disregard these signals, endangering young lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, thousands of accidents occur each year because drivers fail to obey bus stop laws. It’s time to put an end to this.

Establishing this part of KY HWY 109 as a no passing zone is a simple yet effective measure. It is achievable through the installation of clear signage and alerts for drivers, educating them on the importance of maintaining safe practices in designated areas of concern, particularly around school buses. This change will not only align with traffic safety standards nationwide but will protect the youngest members of our community.

Let us join hands to urge the Kentucky Department of Transportation to prioritize the safety of our children by making KY HWY 109 a no passing zone. Such a move will significantly decrease the risks they face daily and provide us, the parents, with piece of mind.

Please sign this petition to advocate for our children's safety. Together, we can make a decisive step towards ensuring their well-being and the security of our neighborhood.
