Make Halloween and the Following Day School Holidays
Make Halloween and the Following Day School Holidays
The Issue
Our children love Halloween - it's a time for them to dress up, have fun, and enjoy some late-night trick-or-treating. However, this joyous occasion often comes with a downside. The day after Halloween is typically a school day, which means our kids are expected to be in class bright and early despite having stayed up late the night before. This leads to tiredness, lack of focus, and overall stress for both students and teachers alike.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep deprivation in children can lead to decreased attentiveness, decreased short-term memory, inconsistent performance, and delayed response time. With these potential impacts on our children's learning abilities following Halloween night festivities considered significant enough by experts in child health care.
We believe that declaring both Halloween day and the day after as school holidays would alleviate this issue significantly. It would allow our children to fully enjoy their holiday without worrying about schoolwork or waking up early the next morning.
We urge educational authorities across all levels - local schools boards through state education departments - to consider this proposal seriously for the benefit of our students' well-being as well as their academic performance. Please sign this petition if you agree that we should prioritize our kids' health over maintaining an inflexible academic calendar.
