The Issue

Navigating Glasgow as a wheelchair user is a daily struggle and a reminder of how far we still have to go in making our city fully inclusive. I can't count the number of times I’ve felt frustrated and isolated because I couldn’t enter a restaurant, attend a gathering at a friend's place, or even use a public toilet. Believe me when I say this is not just a personal issue — it's a city-wide problem affecting thousands like me, forcing us to stay indoors and missing out on life just because the infrastructure isn't there.

Currently, numerous establishments across Glasgow remain inaccessible to those of us who use wheelchairs. Without proper doors or accessible toilets and lacking essential features like lifts, even the most historic buildings become no more than barriers to our daily lives. The result? Not only are we deprived of socialising, working, or simply enjoying what our city has to offer, but we're also made to feel invisible and unimportant.

Did you know that around 1 in 5 people in the UK have a disability? An alarming percentage of them face similar access issues every day. It's not just about convenience; it's about basic human rights and dignity. The Equality Act of 2010 demands reasonable adjustments for disabled individuals, but a closer look around will tell you we are far from meeting this mandate.

We are calling on Glasgow City Council and local businesses to take immediate action. We must retrofit older buildings with lifts, widen doorways, and ensure accessible toilets are available in every public venue. It’s a feasible goal, requiring commitment and collaboration from both the public and private sectors.

Achieving full accessibility in Glasgow will not only change lives but also send a powerful message of inclusivity. Let's transform our city into one that stands by its promise of equality and opportunity for everyone, regardless of physical abilities.
