Make flights to Ghana fair and affordable

The Issue

Many travellers between the UK and Ghana, including myself, have been struggling with the exorbitant cost of flights for years. During Christmas, Easter, and summer holidays, the prices often double or triple, making it unaffordable for many to visit their families, attend important events, or maintain their cultural and emotional connections to Ghana. It is not just an economic issue; it is a human issue transcending borders. The Ghanaian diaspora has a right to stay connected to their homeland without being subjected to prohibitive costs.

The paucity of airline competition on the UK–Ghana route allows carriers like British Airways, KLM/Air France, and TAP Portugal to impose inflated fares. This lack of competition disproportionately impacts families, students, and low-income travellers, causing them to miss significant family events such as funerals, weddings, births, and other milestones.

The current situation leads to severe financial exploitation of the Ghanaian community simply because their predictable travel patterns allow for price hikes that take advantage of their necessity to travel.

We are calling on British Airways, KLM / Air France, and TAP Portugal to review their pricing strategies and offer more competitive and fair fares for flights between the UK and Ghana. Additionally, we urge regulatory authorities to investigate the pricing structures on this route and encourage more airlines to enter the market, thereby increasing competition and lowering flight costs.

The Ghanaian community and other travelers deserve better. Suddenly high fares should not be a barrier between families and their loved ones. We call for a fair shake — a recognition of travel as an indispensable tool for maintaining familial and cultural ties.

Sign this petition to demand fair and affordable airfare between the UK and Ghana for all travellers.
