Make flashing car lights rapidly illegal and impose fines

The Issue

Driving has become increasingly dangerous for me and others due to the prevalence of flashing car lights and high-intensity headlights, particularly LED and HID lights, which can cause a condition known as "flash blindness." This kind of blindness, even if temporary, is dangerous and can lead to car accidents, jeopardizing not only my safety but also that of other drivers and pedestrians.

Studies indicate that bright, flashing lights can drastically impair a driver's visual capacity, rendering them unable to see for several seconds. In a fast-paced environment like a highway, these few seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

Having been on the road for over five years, I've personally experienced the debilitating effects of these lights almost daily. As someone with eye sensitivity, or photophobia, driving under these conditions is not just uncomfortable—it's perilous. Light sensitivity affects between 5% and 20% of the general population.

Flashing lights are entirely unregulated. There is no limit to how intense they can be or how rapidly they flash. This lack of regulation has lead to epileptic seizures, migraines, panic attacks, eye damage, decreased vision and increased risk of injury and death.

What we're aiming for is not only awareness but also actionable change. I propose making the use of flashing lights in all categories of automobiles, including cars, micro buses, and motorcycles, illegal. Additionally, fines should be imposed on those who disregard this rule as a deterrent.

Safety is a right, and no one should have their vision compromised because of the negligent use of high-intensity lights by other road users. I am calling on all automobile regulatory bodies to take immediate action to ban the use of such lights and protect all drivers and passer byes alike.
