Make Ferrets a legal pet to be kept in Queensland with a proper permit system in place

The issue

Growing up in NSW my partner & I never had the chance to own ferrets. Instead, we grew up with different pets. My partner had a dog as a pet who eventually died due to natural causes. I had a cat who tragically got mauled to death by our neighbours dog. We will never stop missing our beloved pets but we are ready for new pets to give our love to, which are a pair of ferrets.

Now unfortunately we have found out that ferrets are not permitted as pets in Queensland. This law would definitely be effecting many people and families. We believe it is very unreasonable that such a law exists in Queensland while in other states it does not.

We strongly believe that many people would benefit having these creatures as pets. Ferrets are quite a popular pet. They are sociable, charming, affectionate, smart and loyal to their owners.

We have read that in Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory a specific permit is required to own a ferret. Why hasn’t Queensland brought this reasonable system into effect also?

Ferret ownership can be possible as many people are able to responsible owners of ferrets. This can be done mandatory licensing or education for the owners if need be. Suitable penalties should be in place in the event that some people are not responsible owners.

A reasonable and balanced law that caters to everybody's interests can be established. Us along with many Queensland residents would love to have to have these adorable creatures in their family. Queenslanders should be able to have pet ferrets considering the rest of the states in the country are allowed to.

Please join us in urging the Queensland government to rethink its position on ferret ownership. Sign the petition to make ferrets legal to be kept as pets in Queensland. Show your support for a permitting system that respects both local biodiversity and gives Queensland residents the ability to have pet ferrets.
