Make FCPS middle schools start later
The Issue
As a concerned parent, I've witnessed the toll early school start times take on our children's health and well-being. It is increasingly evident that the current start times for middle schools in the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system are negatively impacting students by not allowing them sufficient sleep.
Numerous studies have shown that adolescents require 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night for optimal health, yet with middle schools starting as early as 7:30 AM, many students must wake up as early as 5:30 AM to catch their bus. This leads to sleep deprivation, which can result in a variety of issues including decreased academic performance, increased incidence of mental health struggles, and a higher risk for behavioral problems.
Consider the findings from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 AM or later to help students get the sleep they need. Despite this, FCPS has yet to adjust their schedules to align with these recommendations, leaving our children at a disadvantage.
The benefits of later start times are clear. These include improved attention and cognitive performance, a decrease in absenteeism, and even a reduction in car accidents involving teen drivers due to increased alertness. Furthermore, a later start does not necessarily mean a dramatic shift in school activities; high schools across the nation have successfully implemented later start times with minimal disruption to after-school programs.
Join me in urging FCPS to change middle school start times to 8:30 AM or later. By doing so, we can prioritize our children's health and education, setting them up for a successful future.
Please sign this petition to let our school board know that the well-being of our children should come first, and it's time to take action by adopting later school start times.
