Make Faygate Roundabout Safe

Make Faygate Roundabout Safe
The Issue
Faygate Roundabout is dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users. Every day, local residents must cross multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic on the A264 with no safe or controlled crossings. It is intimidating and unsafe for many people, including older residents, parents with pushchairs, children, and those with mobility difficulties. For many of these people, social mobility is reduced.
This junction is a vital route connecting Faygate, Colgate and Kilnwood Vale, and a key crossing point for people accessing buses, jobs and local services. Yet the current layout creates a major barrier to walking, cycling and public transport.
Key problems
- Fast-moving traffic makes it difficult and dangerous to cross
- Heavy traffic throughout the day, especially at peak commuting times
- Busy Saturday car boot sales bring even more vehicles and pedestrians
- No safe, clearly marked or controlled pedestrian crossings
- Poor visibility due to vegetation and vehicles turning on the roundabout
- The new garage has made the junction more complex and hazardous
- Population growth has increased the number of people needing to cross safely and traffic volumes
- An ageing population, including residents at Durrants Village, makes the current layout unsuitable.
- A history of serious incidents, including a fatal accident.
Our request
We call on West Sussex County Council to treat this as a matter of urgency and take immediate action to make Faygate Roundabout safe for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.
